Company History

A.C. (Sandy) Loyd originally founded Mid America Distributors (MAD), also known as MAD Fireworks. Initially trained as an accountant, Sandy entered the fireworks industry in 1955 while working with his brother, L.W. Loyd, in South Pittsburg, TN. He collaborated with his brother until 1967, when he relocated to Nashville.

Upon moving to Nashville in 1968, Sandy embarked on several new business ventures unrelated to fireworks. However, by the early 1970s, he returned to the fireworks industry and established a few seasonal retail locations. In 1973, he officially launched Mid America Distributors, Inc. (MAD), initially operating under the tradename “Fireworks Supermarket.”

Sandy had three sons who all contributed to the family business during the busy summer months. In 1977, Roger Loyd, his middle son, joined the company full-time. At that time, the company operated only six retail locations.

Over the next 28 years, Roger expanded the business to approximately 50 locations. In 2005, his sons, Jake and Will, also joined the company full-time. With their assistance, the business now boasts over 80 retail locations.

In 2007, MAD founded the Tennessee Fireworks Association, a 501(c) nonprofit organization focused on promoting fireworks use and safety in Tennessee.

In 2018, after 40 years of operating under the tradename Fireworks Supermarket, the company rebranded to MAD Fireworks.

Today, the company’s headquarters is in La Vergne, TN, operating from a 55,000-square-foot facility. Roger currently serves as the CEO, with his son Jake taking on the role of President.

MAD Fireworks has become the most trusted and respected source of consumer fireworks in Tennessee and central Kentucky, with a particularly strong presence in Middle Tennessee.

Pyrotechnic Associations and Affiliations

Here at MAD Fireworks, consumer safety is one of our highest priorities. By maintaining our membership with the largest pyrotechnic councils and associations, we are able to keep up to date with the most current laws and safety standards.

  • The American Pyrotechnics Association

    The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) is the oldest and most respected association in the fireworks industry. It represents the entire fireworks industry – professional display, consumer fireworks, proximate pyrotechnic, manufacturers, importers, and distributors, domestic and foreign.

  • National Fireworks Association

    The National Fireworks Association (NFA) was created in 1992. The mission of this organization is to increase the awareness of safe practices and use of fireworks. The majority of the membership includes smaller retail consumer fireworks companies. The NFA is by far the best organization to provide fireworks retailers to personally view thousands of live product demos of dozens of fireworks suppliers including domestic and foreign companies.

  • National Council on Fireworks Safety

    The National Council on Fireworks Safety is a nonprofit 501(c) organization dedicated to educating the public about the safe and responsible enjoyment of consumer fireworks.

  • Tennessee Fireworks Association

    The Tennessee Fireworks Association is a nonprofit 501(c) organization dedicated to assisting Tennessee fireworks companies to adapt to various challenges to the state fireworks industry, including the oversight of new legislation by the Tennessee General Assembly. MAD Fireworks was actually the company that founded and started the Tennessee Fireworks Association, which is the only state-wide fireworks association in the State of Tennessee.

At MAD Fireworks we are committed to only the highest quality and value.

  • We hand-select every item we carry. Products are tested to make sure they meet our strict quality standards as well as federal regulations. In the unlikely event that one of our products does not perform in full or is defective, we will honor our “no dud” guarantee by replacing the item.
  • Only defective items may be returned. In the event you need to replace a defective item, you must return the item to the location where you bought it and provide proof of purchase.
  • All items must be used in accordance with all labeling instructions. If the non-performing item is no longer in stock, it may be replaced with another item of equal or greater value.
  • All items will be replaced on a discretionary basis.
